Data Source Attribution
RiseCast stands on public data. These are the sources, their licenses, and the credit they are owed.
RiseCast is built on public and openly licensed data. Sources, licenses, and the credit we owe:
USGS (United States Geological Survey)
Streamflow and gauge height from USGS Water Services. US government work, public domain. No attribution legally required; we credit "Data: USGS" on conditions views as good practice. USGS asks that data not be presented as officially endorsed.
NOAA / National Weather Service
Forecasts and alerts from api.weather.gov. US government work, public domain. Our client sends the contact User-Agent the NWS API policy requests. Credited as "Forecast: NOAA/NWS".
Open-Meteo
Supplemental weather data. Licensed CC-BY 4.0, attribution required. Credit line used in the app and on the site: "Weather data by Open-Meteo.com" with a link to https://open-meteo.com.
OpenStreetMap
Base map data underlying our tiles. Licensed ODbL. Required credit, displayed on every map view: "(c) OpenStreetMap contributors" linking to https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright.
MapTiler
Tile hosting and map styles (free tier per SETUP.md). MapTiler terms require visible attribution alongside the OSM credit: "(c) MapTiler" linking to https://www.maptiler.com/copyright/. Both credits render in the map attribution control.
PAD-US (Protected Areas Database of the United States)
Public land boundaries used for access classification. USGS product, public domain. Credited as "Public lands: USGS PAD-US" where access data is shown.
Fly shop reports
Third-party content summarized under the ingestion policy (scraping-policy.md). Every report card carries the shop name and a link to the original report.
Compliance checklist for any new data source
- Confirm the license and whether attribution is required.
- Add the source here with its credit line.
- Wire the credit into the relevant UI surface.
- If the source is a crawled site, it goes through the ingestion policy, never a one-off fetch.
OpenFreeMap and Photon (keyless fallbacks)
When no MapTiler key is configured, base map tiles come from OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org, OSM data under ODbL) and town search from Photon by komoot (photon.komoot.io, OSM data under ODbL). Both credits render on the attribution screen alongside the OpenStreetMap credit.
