RiseCast Report Ingestion Policy

You probably found this in your server logs. Here is exactly what our crawler does, what it publishes, and how to turn it off.

Last updated 2026-07-07

RiseCast surfaces fly shop fishing reports to anglers. This page describes exactly how our crawler behaves and how shops can control it.

How RiseCastBot behaves

  • User-Agent: RiseCastBot/1.0 (+https://risecast.fish/bot). We never disguise the bot.
  • robots.txt is fetched and honored before every crawl (cached for 24 hours). If your robots.txt disallows us, we do not fetch.
  • Only configured report pages are fetched, on a low-frequency schedule (typically once or twice per day per shop). We do not spider whole sites.
  • Exponential backoff on errors and on any 429 or 5xx response.

What we publish

  • Structured summaries only: current conditions, recommended flies, active hatches, and a report date.
  • Every report card shows the shop's name and links back to the original report.
  • We never republish full report text, images, or anything beyond the structured summary.

Our position: a short structured summary with prominent attribution and a link drives traffic to shops rather than replacing them. If you disagree for your shop, opting out is one email.

Opting out

Email bots@risecast.fish with your shop domain and we will remove your site from the source list and delete stored summaries, normally within 3 business days. A robots.txt disallow for RiseCastBot has the same effect without email.

We prefer partnerships

If you run a shop, we would rather receive your reports directly. An RSS or JSON feed, or a simple email arrangement, gets your reports into RiseCast faster and more accurately than crawling, with the same attribution and link back. Contact partners@risecast.fish.
