RiseCast Privacy Policy

This is written in plain language on purpose. If anything here is unclear, email support@risecast.fish and we will explain it.

The short version

• Your catch journal and its photos live on your phone. We never see them unless you share a catch to a circle, and a shared catch never includes where it was caught.
• Your markers (spots) are stored on our server so they sync, and only you can see them unless you share one with a private circle.
• We do not sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.

What we collect, and why

Your account. Your email address, so you can sign in and reset your password. If you use Sign in with Apple, we receive an Apple identifier and the email Apple shares with us (which can be a private relay address). We give every account a username (like angler_1a2b3c4d5e) that other members of your circles see.

Markers you save. A name, notes, a type (fishing spot, parking, camp and so on) and the exact position. Only you can see a marker unless you share it with a circle you belong to, exactly or as an approximate area. Marker photos stay on your phone and are never uploaded.

Circles. The circles you create or join, their members, and what you post: shared markers, notes, and catches you choose to share. A shared catch carries the species, length, fly, date, flow and water temperature, the name of the water if you leave that on, a caption if you write one, and the photo if you include it. Before a photo leaves your phone it is saved again without its location data, and our server removes any remaining photo metadata before storing it. Only members of that circle can see it.

Access reports. When you mark an access point Still good, report a Problem or say Not here, or suggest a new public access point, we store the report with your account. A suggested access point is published on the map for everyone (its location, kind and name). We never show who sent a report or a suggestion.

Water alerts. If you turn on alerts, we store this phone's push token, the waters you chose and which kinds of alert you want, and a record of the alerts we sent so we do not repeat them.

Help and feedback. What you write, the reply address you give us (we fill in your account email; you can change it), and the app version, iOS version and device model, so we can fix bugs. Reports of a circle post include which post.

Subscriptions. RevenueCat and Apple tell us whether your account has RiseCast Pro. We never see or store card numbers.

Crash reports. If the app crashes, Sentry receives a crash report: what went wrong in the code, the app and iOS versions, and the device model. Crash reports carry no user identifier, and any coordinates are removed before a report leaves your phone.

Usage analytics. Off unless you turn on "Share anonymous usage analytics" in More. When on, events describe which features you use and never include coordinates.

Your location

RiseCast uses your location only while the app is open and only for a feature you are using: showing where you are on the map, finding water near you, logging a catch, using your position as the trip planner start, or placing a marker. We never track your location in the background.

• When you log a catch, the app sends that position to the US National Weather Service and Open-Meteo to stamp the weather on your catch. They receive the position but nothing that identifies you. The catch and its position then stay on your phone.
• When you look for water near you, your position is sent to our server to find it and is not stored.
• A marker's exact position is stored on our server and is protected by the database itself (Row Level Security): even our own app code cannot read another person's exact marker.

What we never do

• We do not sell your data, to anyone, ever.
• We do not share your markers, catches or location with advertisers or data brokers, and we have no ads.
• We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
• We do not use your data to train AI models. The only AI RiseCast uses (Anthropic's Claude) reads public fly shop report pages to write short summaries. No personal data is sent to it.

Your controls

• Save a copy of your catch log: More, Your data, Save a copy of my catch log.
• Delete your account: More, Account, Delete account and data. This deletes your account and everything stored with it on our server (markers, circles you own, your posts and their photos, alerts and reports) and wipes RiseCast's data on your phone. If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke RiseCast's access to your Apple ID. Deleted data can remain in our encrypted backups for a short time until they roll off.
• Circles: leave a circle at any time; delete your own posts; block an angler so you no longer see their posts; report a post to us.
• Alerts and analytics can be turned off at any time in More.
• To ask for a copy of what we hold about you, or for anything else, email support@risecast.fish.

Companies we rely on

• Supabase: our database, sign-in and photo storage (United States).
• Apple: Sign in with Apple, in-app purchases and push notifications.
• RevenueCat: subscription status.
• Expo: delivers push notifications to Apple.
• Sentry: crash reports.
• PostHog: usage analytics, only if you opt in.
• MapTiler and OpenFreeMap: map tiles and town search. They see the map area you view and the town names you search, not your GPS position.
• US National Weather Service and Open-Meteo: weather for a logged catch.
• Anthropic: summarizes public fly shop reports (no personal data).

Children

RiseCast is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for meaningful changes, tell you in the app.
